A manager can assign work and deadlines. Part of transformational leadership is helping people understand the why behind their work. Transformational leadership is about vision, the improvement of those that work for you, new ideas, and significant change.
The hard part for managers is establishing these ideas into daily habits. There do not need to be grand speeches or sweeping reforms. It is the little things that influence how a team operates and reacts in times of pressure.
- Provide a Clear Direction to Your Team
Begin by explaining what the team is trying to accomplish. Do not stop at the target. Explain why it matters.
So, if you say, “We need to speed up responses to customers” − instead explain that faster responses can improve the customer experience.
Purpose adds more meaning to day-to-day activities.
- Ask Before You Tell
Transformational leadership is more about inspiring people to think rather than just follow order.
For each issue, you should have a look at questions like:
- Why do you think happened like that?
- Is there a different way to play it?
- What would you change?
- What support do you need?
Such questions can help you persuade employees to be idea-contributors and also take ownership.
- Give Useful Feedback
They should be alleged at the specific point of dividend: good, easy to receive feedback, or something else. Let employees know what was successful, where things fell short, and what the next step is for them to consider.
Do not use an annual review to talk about performance. Short, regular conversations can help feedback become more digestible and actionable.
- Help People Grow
Learning should be built into routine management. Allow employees to accept new responsibilities, spearhead projects, and build on existing skills.
If you learn how to practice transformational leadership effectively as a manager, know that the employee would need personalized development. Not all the individual needs to be supported the same way.
- Lead Through Your Actions
Employees notice what managers do. Listen to people if you want them to be open with their communication. If you want accountability, take ownership of your own faults.
You can model the behaviors that you would like to see in your team.
- Turn Ideas into Action
Ideas don’t matter unless they inspire action that leads to utility. Feed high-potential ideas a solid next step. Assign an owner, deadline and metric.

Make Leadership a Daily Practice
Do you take transformational behavior as an onetime technique for management. It is leading through purpose, trust, development, and the willingness to improve.
As a manager, training on how to effectively practice transformational leadership should focus on everyday actions that are consistent. You can begin to slowly build a more cohesive and developed team through open communication, strategic questioning, helpful feedback, and professional development of employees.
